Nightscribe / Changelog

Nightscribe changelog

A public record of what the program can do and how it has improved — from the first 1.0.0 release through the current build. Existing Software Keys keep working across these updates.

Current release: 1.0.4 · Updated August 15, 2026 · Buy / download

Version 1.0.4 — August 15, 2026

Comfort, clarity, and a studio that feels like yours.

  • Color schemes (View → Color scheme). Keep the familiar Nightscribe Default look, or switch to Classic Light (Windows-style), Terminal High Contrast, and seasonal themes (Halloween, Christmas, Fall, Spring, Summer, Winter). Menus, panels, and buttons follow the scheme; PDF / Kindle / print exports stay print-natural.
  • Theme-aware chrome. Binder, manuscript toolbars, and Story Atlas headers no longer stay stuck on black when you leave the default theme. Non-default schemes use raised, dimensional buttons so controls match the look.
  • AI tools stay out of the way when AI is off. Grammar, Describe, Rewrite, Expand, Shorten, Tips, and Generate only appear when Enable AI assistance is turned on in Tools → AI Settings — not grayed out, simply gone.
  • Character portraits match the advertised layout. Portraits span the Story Atlas width and grow toward ~38% of the Characters pane when you widen it; they shrink when the sidebar is narrow so your form fields stay usable.
  • Safer portrait removal. Remove asks for confirmation (default No) so an accidental click doesn’t wipe a character picture.

Benefit: Longer sessions feel more personal; optional AI doesn’t clutter the bar; cast portraits look the way the product shows them.

Version 1.0.3 — August 12, 2026

Word Processor polish and a more comfortable Story Atlas.

  • Word Processor mode refined. Clearer document workflow (formerly Misc): Pages-first A4 desk, sticky Format/Tools pop-outs, and page zoom so everyday papers feel like a real word processor — without changing novel defaults.
  • Roomier Story Atlas. Larger text fields, better splitters and scroll behavior, and Chapter Summary planning/cast sub-tabs so research work is easier on both laptop and desktop screens.
  • Library naming. Word Processor projects sit in a clearer library path, with migration from older Misc folders.

Benefit: Essays, letters, and resumes stay isolated from fiction layout; Atlas research is less cramped.

Version 1.0.2 — July 29, 2026

Stability and day-to-day writing comfort after launch.

  • Installer and studio hardening. Smoother Windows Setup experience and reliability fixes for the three-column workspace on common laptop sizes.
  • Writing-session polish. Incremental improvements to editor chrome, project open/save flow, and companion features that keep Focus Writing and page views steady during long drafts.
  • Optional Discord presence. Show Nightscribe as your activity while the app is open (Tools settings) — useful for writing communities, easy to leave off.

Benefit: Fewer interruptions when you sit down to write; install and reopen projects with more confidence.

Version 1.0.1 — July 27, 2026

First maintenance release after 1.0.0.

  • Post-launch fixes. Early corrections for packaging, first-run activation flow, and edge cases reported right after the public 1.0.0 drop.
  • Download and activation clarity. Clearer path from purchase to installer so licensed writers can get writing faster.

Benefit: A cleaner first hour with Nightscribe — less friction between paying and putting words on the page.

Version 1.0.0 — July 2026

The first shipping studio — Binder · Manuscript · Story Atlas.

  • Three-column fiction workspace. Chapters and scenes in the Binder, rich-text manuscript in the center, Story Atlas research on the right — autosaved into portable .nightscribe project folders.
  • Page views & Focus Writing. Desk, Paperback, Hardcover, and Kindle stages (F8); Focus Writing (F11) with companion Binder/Atlas window and dimming for deep work.
  • Story Atlas bible. Characters (with portraits), settings, world, timeline, brainstorm, progress, chapter summaries, synopsis tools, and Publishing controls for covers and front matter.
  • Optional AI. Bring your own OpenAI-compatible key for Grammar, Describe, Rewrite, Expand, Shorten, Tips, brainstorm, and character helpers — writing never requires AI.
  • Word Processor mode. A separate path for essays, letters, resumes, and notes: templates, images, columns, headers/footers, print, and A4 PDF — isolated from novel layout rules.
  • Publish & export. Compile to PDF, HTML, Word (.docx), Kindle-ready EPUB, and WordPress (XML-RPC), with options for covers, title page, and spacing.
  • Your files, your library. Projects under Documents/Nightscribe (Books, Short Stories, Word Processor), with a portable Windows build and indefinite personal license.

Benefit: One calm desktop for drafting novels and everyday documents — outline, page, and research in the same glance.

Notes

  • Your existing Software Key works on 1.0.1–1.0.4. Re-download the newest installer when you want the latest features.
  • Export and print colors stay independent of UI color schemes — manuscripts compile the way they always have.
